I stopped by Ethel's Chocolates on Lake Street, in the pedway between State and Dearborn, and noticed that the location continues to draw small pre-9 AM coffee crowds. As the line at the adjacent Starbucks stretched out the door, Ethel's was ready to serve a cup of coffee to anyone willing to give it a shot. I didn't go in. Wouldn't everyone gossip if they saw me in there at 8:55 AM? "I bet he's buying bonbons," they'd say.
